Plain explanation

Lets you disconnect the engine from the rear wheel so you can change gears and stop without stalling.

Technical

Cable-actuated multi-plate wet clutch in primary drive cover. Clutch lever at handlebar pulls cable to disengage drive plates from driven plates.

Function & location

Engage and disengage engine power to the gearbox input shaft.

Right side of engine — clutch cover on engine case; lever on left handlebar.

• Clutch cable

• Engine oil (wet clutch bathed in oil)

Common wear & symptoms

• Friction plate wear
• Cable stretch
• Weak springs
• Glazed plates from heat

• Slipping under acceleration
• Hard gear engagement
• Incomplete disengagement at lever
• Judder from standstill

Maintenance notes

• Check free play at lever
• Adjust cable per verified procedure
• Inspect for oil contamination on plates if slipping
